Every new year brings a new set of fashion trends. Some of them will stick around, but there are others we just can’t embrace. Your home is no different. Designers look for new ways to refresh your home, whether you’re redecorating, remodeling, or ready to start over with a new home. Homes By Taber’s designers took a look at the 2019 home design trends. While some fashionistas want to veer toward contemporary chic, even more recognize that the Modern Farmhouse style keeps growing.
The Gaines are still gaining.
The Modern Farmhouse style emerged after the housing bubble burst in 2008. It was made popular by a hard-working couple in Waco, Texas. Maybe you’ve heard of them? Chip and Joanna Gaines fueled the passion for this rustic, comfortable style.
Just like the crash of the late 1980s when shabby chic became popular, America needed a new look—one that could be achieved at all price points, DIY-able if needed, and would be durable both physically and through design trends. The Gaines’ show on HGTV, “Fixer Upper”, was an instant success. They inspired homeowners to take on the challenge or reinventing a home that would give them the heartfelt homestyle that rustic decor presents.
In the aftermath of a difficult time, it’s natural for people to look for ways to comfort themselves. In the wake of 9/11, there was a major boost in handcrafting hobbies, like knitting and crocheting, because the feel of the fibers and the ease of creating something was so satisfying. Modern Farmhouse brings a similar sense of textures—mixtures of metals, wood, pottery, textiles, and natural elements. The decor surrounds the family with reminders of simple pleasures.
One look, limitless ways
“This design is still growing because it is the perfect style for the modern, American family,” explains Elizabeth Tucker, one of Homes By Taber’s Design Center team. “Durable finishes, DIY-able, cozy yet hip, achievable on all price points, and at its roots, eco-friendly.”
Elizabeth says that the term “Modern Farmhouse” has been widely used, which is a plus. “The attention has expanded the look to be even more fitting to everyone. This has led to an expansion of interpretation, and this expansion allows for personalization.”
She says there’s a design secret that some homeowners might forget. Personalize your home, rather than attempt to achieve something from a magazine cover. The result is a look that is more inviting and comfortable for your family and guests.
“My favorite thing about this trend is that there is room to add the personal touches and family-friendly elements that make a home durable and inviting, all while being magazine cover-worthy.”
The Modern Farmhouse is here to stay, because it’s personal and inviting. You can be subtle or fully committed. How are you using it in your home?
