Fun Holiday Trends for Your Home

November 18, 2020

The holiday season is quickly approaching, and with families spending more time at home than ever, you may get the urge to go all out with decorations this year. Whether you’ve already started to decorate or are waiting until late November, Homes by Taber has rounded up a few holiday decor trends for you to try. You can pull inspiration from one category or mix and match to infuse multiple trendy elements into your personal style to create your dream holiday home setup.

What’s more, if you’re set in one style for the main living space of your home, consider decorating the areas you don’t normally—your home office and kids’ rooms could always use additional holiday cheer. It gives you the flexibility to experiment with various holiday decorating styles without clashing in your main living spaces.

Classic decorations with a trendy twist

If you’re a fan of the classic holiday decorations like wreaths, characters from the North Pole or just a red-and-green color scheme, there’s no reason to miss out on these. It’s easy to update the classics with modern twists and bring them into the 21st century.

Wreaths don’t have to be made with evergreen branches and red ribbons. Wreaths can now be found in trendy pampas, woven fabric or even made of jingle bells. No matter your style, chances are you can find a wreath to fit it. Even better, get your kids involved and make wreaths for your front door or their bedroom doors as a fun, new tradition that will create holiday memories.

You can love the classic red-and-green holiday color palette and still have an updated style. Instead of decorating with shiny red and green ornaments, consider buying matte round ornaments or unique-shaped ones. By mixing up materials and incorporating complementary colors like whites and golds, you won’t get bored of the classic colors this year.

Everyone loves a well-decorated mantle, typically covered with evergreen branches, candles and other holiday trinkets. Go minimalistic with metal or ceramic trees, brighten up the space with twinkling lights or use an attention-grabbing color scheme like black and silver to experience something new this holiday season.

To really give your home a classic holiday feel, fill tall jars and vases with old-fashioned Christmas candies like red and white striped peppermint sticks, candy ribbons, and traditional candy canes. It gives the kids a special treat to bribe them with through the holiday time and creates a festive focal point on an island counter, dining or coffee table.

Integrate unique fabrics and patterns

Wanting to make your decor a little more upscale without buying all new materials? Consider adding a few pieces with trendy fabrics and patterns that can be used throughout the year, not just the holiday season—giving you more bang for your buck when it comes to investing in accessories. Finding bulk rolls of wired ribbon allows you to incorporate your holiday theme in your tree, wreaths, centerpieces, and even your presents under the tree. If adding wired ribbon to the tree decor, professional tree decorators recommend adding 12-15 bows on a 7.5’ tree, 18-20 bows on a 9’ tree, and 20-24 bows on a 10’ tree to really deck the halls.

Cozy up on your couches and beds with throw blankets and pillows in soft shearling and trendy, chunky-knit fabrics. By getting neutral colors like black, white, silver or gold, they can be easily incorporated into both your holiday-themed trimmings and everyday decorations. Faux leather is all the trending rage, and you can find throw pillow covers or even tree ornaments in this fun and chic fabric.

Small-scale celebration centerpieces

Perhaps one of the biggest changes to this holiday season will be the size of your celebrations. If you’re used to family and friends coming together from far away, your holiday meals might be a bit smaller than normal. While this might be difficult for someone who loves to host, it gives you the excuse to take up more space at the table with festive and trendy centerpieces. Use classic holiday foliage like poinsettias or evergreen branches, throw in some fake (or real) pinecones, weave in battery-operated twinkling lights and spend a little extra time creating ideal place settings. Get as creative as you’d like with centerpieces since they can be taken down right after mealtime.

If you don’t want to spend additional money or time on this part, feel free to pluck select pieces from your existing decorations. Use any small wreaths, borrow garland and ornaments from the tree and include a few battery-operated candles for a professional-looking centerpiece without the extra effort.
