Before you choose your home, though, let’s take a look at Edmond Public Schools, and learn why they are so sought-after.
While you have likely heard that Edmond schools are the best in Oklahoma, there is plenty of evidence to back up this claim. After all, the highly regarded school-ranking website Niche.com has recognized the district as the best in the state year after year. Edmond is also recognized by Niche as one of the best school districts for athletes and one of the best places to teach in Oklahoma drawing students and teachers alike.
The list of evidence of academic excellence in Edmond schools is long, but here is a snapshot:
While the athletic seasons in the 2019-2020 school year were unfortunately cut short, the previous school year had plenty of success. In 2018-2019, Edmond won six OSSAA state athletic championships! Winning teams included baseball, volleyball, boy’s tennis, girl’s golf, cheerleading, and girl’s track. For many of these teams, it was just one in a series of state championship wins! In fact, the district’s high schools have won more than 100 state championships throughout its history.
Edmond does not just dominate in sports. Last year, the Edmond Memorial High School newspaper staff won the Oklahoma Scholastic Media’s All-Oklahoman and All-State Awards. The district’s award-winning bands and orchestras have previously been invited to play at New York’s Carnegie Hall and the Strathmore Center in Baltimore.
How do Edmond Public Schools stay so strong? One major reason is strong community support. Over the last 50 years, citizens have approved 59 consecutive bond issues. Throughout the years, these bonds have enabled the district to manage its incredible growth and scale its success.
The most recent bond proposals, passed in early 2019, totaled $93 million. Some of this amount will fund necessary maintenance, such as new flooring, roofing, or parking lots. Each of the three high schools will get an upgraded stage, lights, and sound system. A total of $3.7 million will go to improvements in security, such as door control devices and electronic ID badges for students and staff.
The larger expenditures include $7.9 million for school equipment. This encompasses everything from athletic equipment to library books to maintenance vehicles. A total of $10 million is earmarked for technology improvements, including wireless networking equipment, phone systems, and computers allowing improvements for the best of the best.
The largest chunk of the 2019 bond money is for the most exciting project: two new schools. Children in several Taber communities will attend one of the new schools, Redbud Elementary, in August 2021. Find out which communities in Edmond that Redbud Elementary will serve, and start building your home now.
Redbud Elementary will be located east of I-35 at the corner of Douglas and Coffee Creek Road. It will be the first elementary school in the district located east of the interstate. The boundaries for Redbud Elementary will include some of the students currently attending Centennial Elementary.
The Stacy Group, Inc., which also designed Frontier Elementary, is the architect. Construction on the $20.7 million facility has already begun. The Lippert Brothers, Inc., is managing the project, which will include two new buildings totaling 70,800 square feet.
Edmond Public Schools will add a second new elementary school at an undetermined date at NW 150th Street and N Pennsylvania Avenue. This school, Scissortail Elementary, is intended to help manage the significant growth in the southwest portion of the district. It was originally set to open at the start of the 2021-2022 school year, but those plans have been postponed.
For many families, owning a home anywhere in the Edmond Public Schools boundaries is the goal. After all, every school in the district is highly rated. Just as the district does not allow students to fall behind, it also ensures every one of its schools meets its high expectations. Just look at the district’s three high schools:
